The Section for History and Philosophy of Science at the Department of Science Education seeks an excellent scholar for a position in the history and philosophy of the formal sciences. The position is at the Tenure-track Assistant Professor level. The position is open from 1 September 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

We seek candidates with a research record of relevance to scientific practice (e.g., philosophy of science in practice, integrated history and philosophy of science, socially relevant philosophy of science, or similar) in the formal sciences. Backgrounds in more traditional as well as more modern specialty areas in the history and philosophy of the formal sciences, e.g., data science, machine learning, and big data, are welcome, if they relate to scientific practice and the candidate is fully capable of teaching in all our formal science courses.

Duties and responsibilities
The position includes approximately 50% time for the candidate’s free research and approximately 50% time for other tasks – primarily teaching.

The successful candidate is expected to conduct:

  • Research, grant applications, development of the field, supervision and (depending on the level of position) research management such as supervision and training of research fellows and other staff.
  • Departmental teaching – including supervising students, coordinating, and teaching courses for students, and preparing and conducting exams. Most of the teaching duties will relate to mandatory courses in philosophy of science for bachelor students in science programs.
  • Other tasks requested by the Department – including engaging with and participating in Department and Faculty governance structures.

Formal expectations of the candidate
Applicants must have a PhD in the history/philosophy of science with documented competences in the formal sciences (mathematics, computer science, mathematical economics or similar). Candidates must have an academic standing showing internationally competitive research, and/or have internationally recognized high potential to make a future impact.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, internationally competitive research. The ability to attract external funding will be considered together with outreach qualifications. Teaching qualifications are not mandatory but documented teaching qualifications and teaching experience will be considered.

Six overall criteria apply for assistant professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates. Furthermore, each candidate must be assessed according to the specific requirements stated in the job advertisement.
