Job description

Visiting Assistant Professor of Philosophy 

The Avila University School of Humanities in the College of Arts & Sciences, guided by the mission of excellence in teaching and learning, and dedicated to the service to the Dear Neighbor, is actively seeking a full-time Visiting Assistant Professor of Philosophy. The successful candidate will teach courses in ethics, socio-political philosophy, and/or content related to gender and race theories. This is an academic, 10-month appointment for one academic year that is eligible for annual renewal for up to three years based on performance.  The appointment will begin in August 2024. 

Responsibilities:

  • Teach equivalent of 12 credit hours per semester (4:4 load for Fall:Spring semesters).
  • Teach in all areas of the Philosophy curriculum (mainly 100 and 200 level courses). Courses related to this position include Ethics, Socio-political Philosophy, and content related more broadly to gender and race theories.
  • Teach and collaborate with colleagues in possible interdisciplinary team teaching models.
  • Create an environment in the classroom which facilitates effective student learning through the use of a wide range of teaching strategies and which motivates students to think, to question, and to critically analyze.
  • If desired, participate in service efforts in the School of Humanities and the College of Arts & Sciences.
  • Champion diversity, build an inclusive culture and learning experience, and maintain an equitable learning environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Philosophy, or a closely related discipline, completed by date of appointment.
    • Doctoral candidates with All but Dissertation (ABD) status will be given full consideration for the position if the completion date is in the near future.
  • Full-time faculty will be academically qualified in previously mentioned areas of responsibility. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Candidates that specialize in an area of value theory and/or contemporary philosophy are preferred.
  • Teaching experience in post-secondary education with a track record of research excellence is desired.
  • Multilingual skills highly preferred.
