Job Summary
The Humanities, Social Science, and Communication (HSC) Department at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Philosophy. The position will begin fall of 2024 for a one-year appointment with the possibility of one additional year of appointment. The candidate will be responsible for teaching a variety of Ethics courses as part of MSOE’s general education program, including Engineering Ethics and Bioethics.  The selected candidate will teach 4 courses each semester and is encouraged to engage with the department and the university, but the position carries no service or scholarship expectations.

Who We Are
Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) is an academic institution intrinsically tied to the real world—a confluence of industry knowledge, work ethic and an enduring desire to know more. The university offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering, computer science, machine learning, user experience, construction management, actuarial science, business and nursing. With about 3,000 students, faculty and staff, MSOE is large enough for big opportunities and small enough for personal attention.

A Small University Dedicated to Achieving Big Things
MSOE is a supportive environment where everyone is valued. Our method of learning by doing is our distinction: it is how we teach, how we learn and how we serve. Faculty bring their real-world experience into the classroom, and small class sizes keep instructors in close contact with students. MSOE’s top priority is serving our students. By joining our community, you are building the leaders of tomorrow.

Our Mission
MSOE is the university of choice for those seeking an inclusive community of experiential learners driven to solve the complex challenges of today and tomorrow. We are united by our six values—collaboration, excellence, inclusion, innovation, integrity and stewardship—which represent the core of our campus culture. Under the leadership of Dr. John Walz, MSOE has embarked on an ambitious strategic plan, Extraordinary Together, that propels the institution forward. MSOE fosters a welcoming and inclusive environment where diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) are central to all campus initiatives and guided by our DEIB Strategic Plan.

Minimum Requirements

  • AOS: Open
  • AOC: Ethics and Applied Ethics
  • A Ph.D. in Philosophy or related field
  • The candidate should have a strong record of undergraduate teaching experience.
  • The candidate should have strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build successful relationships with students and faculty from other departments.

About the Department
The HSC department holds a unique position in an applications-oriented institution which allows faculty the opportunity to design and teach a variety of courses across disciplines. The department is a collegial environment with three other philosophers as well as faculty in psychology, history, literature, Spanish, user experience, and communication.  Our offices are housed in the Grohmann Museum, which displays a collection of industrial art created from 1580 to the present.

About the University
An institution that offers degrees in engineering, business, nursing, and user experience, MSOE is located on the beautiful east side of downtown Milwaukee, just blocks from Lake Michigan and within easy walking distance of the city’s highly acclaimed fine arts and entertainment venues.  The institution serves approximately 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The mission of MSOE is to be the university of choice for those seeking an inclusive community of experiential learners driven to solve the complex challenges of today and tomorrow. The MSOE community is guided by six values – collaboration, excellence, inclusion, innovation, integrity and stewardship – that represent the core of our campus culture.
