History of Philosophy Forum Postdoctoral Research Fellow

The History of Philosophy Forum at the University of Notre Dame (http://historyofphilosophy.nd.edu/) invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the History of Philosophy. The position begins August 1, 2024, and is renewable for up to three years. The Fellow will teach a 1-1 load and receive a competitive salary, plus a $2000 budget for research expenses. Fellows are expected to be in residence at the University of Notre Dame during the academic year, and to participate actively in the academic life of the University, the Philosophy Department and the History of Philosophy Forum. We invite applications from doctoral students and recent graduates in philosophy who are engaged in research in any area of the history of philosophy. For eligibility, the Ph.D. must be obtained between August 1, 2019 and July 31, 2024, though preference will be given to candidates who have been awarded their PhD by the time of the application's submission. Preference will be given to candidates whose research fits the Philosophy Department's current areas of strength in the history of philosophy, and who have prior experience with mentoring undergraduate research and writing. Full Duties: Research: The fellowship is primarily oriented towards research. The Fellow will be expected to spend the majority of their time pursuing their own research on a topic within the history of philosophy that will lead to significant scholarly publications. Teaching: The Fellow will teach one undergraduate course each semester for the Philosophy Department. The theme and scope of the course, generally within the Fellow's area of expertise, will be decided together with the Department's Chair. Service: The Fellow will contribute to the development of a new History of Philosophy Forum program geared towards mentoring advanced undergraduates in research and writing. The Fellow will also be expected to participate in the History of Philosophy Forum's and the Philosophy Department's academic events, workshops, and colloquia. Applicants should submit the following materials in one PDF document: • A Cover Letter, addressing why the applicant is a strong fit for this position • A CV • A Research Statement, not more than 3 pages, including specific research plans for the duration of the fellowship • A Teaching Statement, not more than 3 pages, noting in particular any prior experience with mentoring undergraduate writing and/or research. • 3 academic references (names, relationships, and contact information; please ensure that they know we may contact them directly to request a reference letter at a later stage of the process) Further materials (including writing sample, teaching portfolio, and reference letters) will be requested from applicants invited to interview for the position.
