The Katherine Reese Pamplin College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences' Department of History, Anthropology, and Philosophy at Augusta University, responding to enrollment growth in recent years, is seeking applicants for an academic year Lecturer in Philosophy. The selected candidate will be expected to teach Introduction to Philosophy, Introduction to Critical Thinking, and Introduction to Ethics, as well as other undergraduate philosophy classes as required. This is a non-tenure eligible faculty position (9-month contract) with duties anticipated to begin in August 2024. Candidates will have a strong commitment to teaching general education classes. Interest in Bioethics will be considered a plus.

Responsibilities

 

• Teach 8 in-person courses per year as assigned by chair. These will include PHIL 2010 (Introduction to Philosophy) and PHIL 2020 (Introduction to Critical Thinking), PHIL 2030 (Introduction to Ethics), and others as required.

• Teach onsite dual enrollment at local high schools.

• Participate in shared governance of department, college, and university as assigned.

Required Qualifications

 

Master's degree in Philosophy or related field, including at least 18 graduate level hours in Philosophy.

Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:

• -Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation;

• -Evidence of ability as a teacher;

• -Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;

• -Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,

• -Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.

Preferred Qualifications

 

• Earned doctorate in Philosophy or related field.

• Experience in teaching in a college or a university setting.

• Qualifications to teach Bioethics and other courses.

Shift/Salary/Benefits

 

This position is academic year based and typically works August through May, depending on dates outlined in offer letter and yearly contract.

The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0.

Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.
