Job description

The Department of Philosophy at Loyola Marymount University invites applications for one post-doctoral position to teach undergraduate courses in the university core curriculum. Area of specialization is open. The position consists of a one-year term with the possibility of renewal up to three years total. The post-doc should be within 1 year of earning the Ph.D. The objective of this post-doctoral program is to facilitate professional development as teacher-scholars in a Jesuit and Mission driven institution. Fellows will have the opportunity to meet with other post-doctoral fellowship holders in other disciplines and their LMU faculty mentors, and to form an intellectual and social community during their time at LMU. In addition, mentoring and support for research and publication is a key part of this fellowship.

Area of specialization is open. The successful applicant will be expected to teach in the Jesuit context of Catholic higher education. One course is of particular importance, “Philosophical Inquiry,” which is described in our Bulletin as “an introductory exploration of central questions and interpretations of human existence, with special emphasis on theory of knowledge and theory of reality, carried on in light of the Catholic intellectual tradition.” The post-doc may also be asked to teach a core course in ethics described as “a study of the questions which a person must ask, and the answers one must consider, in forming an intelligent philosophy of moral choice, carried on in the light of the Catholic intellectual tradition.”

We seek a dedicated teacher-scholar with demonstrated or the potential of teaching excellence in accordance with LMU’s Mission and justice-driven commitments grounded in our Jesuit and Marymount traditions. The position has a six-course teaching load for the academic year (3-3).

Applicants must include: 1) a cover letter (outlining area of expertise, teaching and research interests, and support of LMU’s distinctive mission); 2) a curriculum vitae; 3) a statement of teaching philosophy that demonstrates your approach to teaching in the liberal arts tradition at a Catholic university, 4) teaching evaluations and/or sample syllabi, 5) a writing sample. Three confidential letters of recommendation should be sent to Dr. Catherine Peters at [email protected].

Only online applications will be accepted.

Please direct questions to the search chair, Dr. Catherine Peters at [email protected] will begin our review of applications on March 15th but will consider applications beyond this date until the search is concluded.  A PhD in Philosophy or related field is required; ABD applications who anticipate completion of the doctorate by Fall 2024 will be considered.

Reasonable expected salary: $68,000.00
