Job description

The Information School (iSchool) at UW-Madison is focused on education and research that expands society's understanding of the role of information in all aspects of science, nature and humanity. We educate students and pursue work that adds to the collective knowledge, productivity and innovation, and to the well-being of people, communities, and society.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison's Information School seeks highly qualified candidates for a one-year position with teaching emphasis in ethics of data, information, computing, and AI. The position will be an academic year/nine-month appointment, to start in August 2024. The position may be extended for up to one additional academic year in part based on evidence of strong performance. The position will involve teaching two courses per semester. One course each semester will be a course in the ethics of data and algorithms suitable for Data Science and Information Science majors.

Applicants should bring the following key contributions:

1. Expertise in theories and concepts key to ethics, democracy, and justice in information, data, and computing. These may include, but are not limited to, race, ethnicity, gender, class, free speech, privacy, surveillance, transparency, content moderation, platform power, trust, misinformation, and human rights.

2. A record of work analyzing socio-technical systems, such as platforms and information systems, algorithms, programming or software practices, surveillance systems, etc.

3. Demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduates.

4. The ability to teach undergraduate courses in ethics of computing, data, and information to students from a range of disciplinary and educational backgrounds, including information, computer, and data sciences.

Responsibilities:

Teach two courses per semester. One course each semester will be LIS 461: Data and Algorithms: Ethics and Policy.

Education:

Required
PhD or other terminal degree, or a degree at least one level above the level of instruction, or otherwise approved as qualified by the Dean.

Preferred
Graduate degree in Library and Information Studies or related field.

Qualifications:

Required Skills/Experience:
- Demonstrated teaching excellence in ethics courses at the undergraduate level.
- Experience and interest in teaching ethics related to data, computing, information, and AI.

Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Appointment Type, Duration:

Terminal, 9 month appointment.
This position has the possibility to be extended up to one additional academic year based on need and/or funding.
