Job description

The Department of Philosophy at Ohio University invites applications for a full-time, one-year Visiting Assistant Professor position (from August 16, 2024, to May 15, 2025). The position is a visiting position and not tenure track. Depending on departmental requirements, funding availability, and the candidate’s successful performance, there is a possibility of extending the position for up to two additional years.

The expected teaching schedule of this one-year position requires the teaching of seven courses at Ohio University, with four courses in one of the semesters and three in the other. AOS and AOC are open; however, the department needs the candidate to teach introduction to philosophy, introduction to ethics, and introduction to philosophy of religion. 80% of the successful candidate’s effort will be in teaching, with a focus on teaching large introductory philosophy courses—such as intro philosophy, intro ethics, intro logic, and philosophy of religion—that serve Ohio University general education requirements. There is also the opportunity and expectation for limited work serving on M.A. thesis committees and/or running independent studies. 20% of the successful candidate’s effort will be in service to the department.

Minimum qualifications:  PhD in philosophy by the time of appointment.   An ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, in English, at a native or near native level.   A minimum of two years of teaching philosophy at the college level.


Preferred qualifications: Experience and demonstrated excellence teaching Intro Philosophy, Intro Ethics, and Philosophy of Religion.

Experience and demonstrated excellence teaching large in-person classes with enrollments > 80.
