Job description

Senior-level appointment, beginning July 1, 2014.  Salary competitive.

The Department of Philosophy at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte seeks an outstanding senior scholar as Department Chair.  The area of teaching and research is open.  Candidates must have: 1) a doctoral degree in philosophy; 2) an academic record appropriate for appointment with tenure in a Philosophy Department; and 3) a commitment to promote diversity as a value in the department, college and university.  While formal administrative experience is preferred, applications from candidates whose work experience has prepared them to do administrative work will be welcomed.  Credentials appropriate for appointment at the level of Full Professor are preferred, and a record of success in securing extramural funding is highly desirable.

The Department offers a major and minor, a Graduate Certificate in Applied Ethics, and an M.A. in Ethics and Applied Philosophy.  Our department has connections to other units across the university, both at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and we are closely affiliated with UNC Charlotte's Center for Professional and Applied Ethics, with which the Chair will be expected to collaborate regularly for campus events and initiatives. The Department is committed to an intertraditional approach to philosophy, growth in the major and graduate programs, and strong practical and engaged research.  The ideal Chair will embrace and augment those commitments. (For more information on the Department, including its vision for intertraditionality, see our website: http://philosophy.uncc.edu.)

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is a doctoral, research-intensive university, located in one of the nation’s fastest-growing metropolitan areas on an expanding modern campus. One of sixteen campuses in one of the oldest public university systems in the United States, UNC Charlotte offers over 26,000 culturally diverse students a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Charlotte's metropolitan area is rich in cultural and racial diversity (over 40% Hispanic/Latino and African-American) and our faculty strives to reflect and interact positively with that population. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences houses 20 departments in the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, physical sciences, and military sciences, as well as 8 research centers and institutes and 13 interdisciplinary programs.

AA/EOE employer.  Minorities, women, and persons with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply.  Screening of applications begins November 1, 2013 and will continue until the position is filled.
