Job Description:

The Department of History, Political Science, and Philosophy in the Cook-Cole College of Arts and Sciences invites applications in Philosophy as a Visiting Assistant Professor (F0161). The person filling this position will teach a mix of introductory and upper-level courses in line with the candidate's area of study (AOS) or area of concentration (AOC), including biomedical ethics and some courses (CTZN 110/410) within Longwood's Civitae Core Curriculum, which emphasizes preparation for democratic citizenship. There may be opportunities to offer upper-level courses linked with the candidate's research.

The ideal candidate will be an excellent teacher, capable of inspiring diverse students to pursue philosophy, and possess teaching and research interests not currently well represented in the department. Candidates with AOSs/AOCs in one or more of the following are especially encouraged to apply: non-Western philosophy, history of philosophy (any area but ancient); philosophy (including ethics) of science, technology, or AI; philosophy of religion (ability to teach a comparative religion course would be a plus); social/political philosophy; philosophy of sex or love; philosophy of race or gender; philosophy, politics, and economics.

Requirements:

  • PhD in Philosophy required; ABD considered.
  • Experience and demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching preferred.
  • A demonstrated ability and commitment to working with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and constituents in support of the university mission is preferred.

Additional Information:

This position is a full-time, one-year, non-tenure-track instructional faculty position. The possibility of renewal will be contingent on performance and available funding. Salary will be commensurate with credentials and experience. A successful criminal background investigation is required.
