The Department of Philosophy at Ashoka University (https://www.ashoka.edu.in/department/department-of-philosophy/) invites applications for up to three assistant professor-rank visiting positions to cover faculty leaves and sabbaticals. (Depending on performance, funding, and departmental needs, these positions may be extended for up to two additional years.) We have particular undergraduate teaching needs in logic (both introductory and advanced), Indian philosophy (introductory and advanced), philosophy of science (introductory and advanced), the history of modern Western philosophy, and a gen-ed style course on mind and behaviour that all Ashoka undergraduates must take. AOS open, AOC should overlap with one or more of our desired areas. All candidates must have earned a Ph.D. in philosophy by the time of appointment. The successful applicant will have a 2/2 teaching load in addition to light administrative and advising duties. Instruction will be in-person. Should you require any clarifications, please contact [email protected] ABOUT ASHOKA The philosophy department at Ashoka University values both historically sensitive and analytic approaches, offering a variety of courses in all the major areas of philosophy. The department offers both a major and a minor and takes part in three interdisciplinary programs: (1) Politics, Philosophy, and Economics, (2) Philosophy and Computer Science, and (3) Psychology and Philosophy. In addition to running the Philosophy Society, the philosophy students also run PhilCon, India’s first undergraduate philosophy conference and have recently started Citta, an undergraduate philosophy journal. Despite Ashoka’s very short history, many of Ashoka philosophy graduates have gone on to exciting careers in industry and NGOs and to continue their academic studies at a variety of prestigious programs including USC, Oxford, Pitt HPS, Tufts, Amherst, Simon Fraser University. Founded in 2014, Ashoka University is a rapidly growing private university dedicated to providing students with an innovative interdisciplinary liberal arts education and an inclusive place to research, think deeply and critically, and express themselves creatively. The university currently offers 12 pure and 9 interdisciplinary majors as well as 17 minor programs. It is also home to a number of interdisciplinary educational and research centers (see https://www.ashoka.edu.in/centres/centres/). Ashoka’s diverse student body is actively engaged with their community and boasts a large number of student organizations as well as regular campus events (see https://www.ashoka.edu.in/clubs-and-societies/) . Ashoka is located in Sonepat, India, about 40 km (25 mi) North of New Delhi, India’s vibrant capital city. Although Ashoka has both on-campus and near-campus faculty residence facilities, it is also accessible from Delhi via a regular shuttle that runs between campus and the Jahangir Puri metro station. The campus is currently home to over 2500 students from 30 states and Union Territories in India as well as 27 other countries. The student to faculty ratio is currently 11:1. In September, 2021, the foundation was laid for a campus expansion that will double the university’s current area. |
