Job description

The Department of Political Science, Philosophy and Economics in the Faculty of Arts and Science at Nipissing University invites applications for a 10-month Limited Term Faculty Appointment. This position is located in North Bay, Ontario. The Philosophy program at Nipissing offers an Honours Specialization, Specialization, Major, and Minor degree. Faculty anticipate making several changes to curriculum over the coming year, with the aim of making the program more flexible for students and strengthening contributions to the university as a whole in the area of ethics. The ideal candidate will have:
• completed or be near to completion of a Ph.D. in Philosophy
• evidence of excellence in teaching at the University level, with teaching competence in the history of philosophy
• an active research agenda in any area of Philosophy; however, the committee would be particularly interested in candidates with an AOS in ethics and public policy-related topics, who are able to contribute to the process of curriculum reform in Philosophy.


The successful candidate should be prepared to teach the following courses:
• PHIL 1117 - Values and the Human Condition (Winter term)
• PHIL 2506 - Thinking Clearly (Fall term)
• PHIL 2306 - Pre-Socratics and Plato (Fall term)
• PHIL 2307 - Aristotle and the Schools (Winter term)
• PHIL 3336 - Reason and Experience (Fall term)
• PHIL 3766 - Special Topics in Philosophy (Winter term)


The annual salary will correspond with qualifications and experience and will follow the Nipissing University Faculty Association (NUFA) Collective Agreement. The appointment will be effective August 1, 2024.
