Job description

The Department of Philosophy invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin as early as July 1, 2024, subject to budgetary approval. Hiring salary will range from $79,132 to $92,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience. The successful applicant will have a Ph.D. (or be ABD with a set defense date) in Philosophy, with a specialization in Ethics, broadly construed. We will consider a specialization in Bioethics or Biomedical Ethics an advantage, but will consider all applicants able and willing to teach Biomedical Ethics on a regular basis.

We seek applicants with a demonstrated ability of producing high-quality research, and potential for securing research funding. The successful candidate will show clear evidence of success or potential with respect to both teaching and departmental/university service. In addition, we will consider it an asset if applicants can demonstrate their ability to forge interdisciplinary collaborations and engage with the community. Biomedical Ethics supports the robust biomedical research programs at the University of Lethbridge, including bioinformatics, health sciences, and Neuroscience. We will consider it an asset if an applicant can demonstrate potential to collaborate with researchers in these areas.

The successful applicant will teach courses and supervise graduate students in their areas of specialization. They will be expected to teach courses that contribute to the Department’s teaching needs at all levels. Applicants should demonstrate in their application materials how their areas of competence can complement the Department’s existing strengths. The ability to teach in these areas from a non-Western perspective would be of value.

Our Department: The Department of Philosophy has an energetic and enthusiastic group of faculty members with research and teaching strengths in Social and Political Philosophy, Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Law, Logic, Argumentation Theory, Pragmatism, Ethics, and Feminist Philosophy. We have a vibrant student culture, a yearly undergraduate conference, and an active philosophy club that has frequent philosophy discussions and maintains its own undergraduate philosophy room. Additionally, the Department has a growing M.A. program that we are committed to diversifying and expanding in the coming years.

Our University: The University of Lethbridge (uLethbridge) is a comprehensive and research-intensive university founded on the principles of liberal education where inspired scholars integrate research and creative activity with teaching. Our University’s Blackfoot name is Iniskim, meaning Sacred Buffalo Stone. Founded in 1967 on traditional Blackfoot land, it is a place where student engagement in learning, creative activities, and research takes place every day. With campuses in Lethbridge and Calgary, uLethbridge offers more than 150 undergraduate and 60 graduate programs in the Faculties of Arts & Science, Education, Fine Arts, and Health Sciences, the Schools of Liberal Education and Graduate Studies, and the Dhillon School of Business. Together, these programs serve more than 8,500 students.

Our Values: The University recognizes that diversity enriches our campus and our community and is fundamental to excellence in teaching, learning, and research. The university as a whole embraces equity as a core value to be truly inclusive of the communities of which we are a part, and this requires ongoing intentional and systemic action. Through recruitment and support of individuals who further enhance our diversity, the University strives to create a diverse and inclusive community where students, faculty and staff feel welcome, are treated equitably, and can thrive.

Our City: Home to more than 100,000 people, Lethbridge is a place where ideas grow. It is a culturally vibrant city with a flourishing arts scene and an active social calendar. We boast stunning scenery, with the Rocky Mountains (only 1.5 hours away by car) clearly visible from many places in the city. The University sits in the side of beautiful coulees, looking down on the Old Man River. We enjoy four distinct seasons, spectacular sunrises and glowing sunsets that illuminate Alberta’s big sky. Lethbridge is only two and a half hours from Calgary’s International Airport and a short drive to both Waterton Lakes National Park in the Mountains and the United States border. It is also an affordable city, with many beautiful neighborhoods on both sides of the Coulees and well-planned parks connected via walking and biking paths.

Our Application Process: All applications must be submitted online and include a letter of application addressing the candidate’s suitability for the advertised position, a curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy, a single-authored writing sample, course syllabi and evidence of teaching effectiveness, and a statement of a research program. One letter of reference and names for two more referees are required. Letter writers for long-listed candidates will be contacted and given 10 days to submit their letters.

Review of applications will begin June 20; the search will remain open until the position is filled and we encourage applications beyond June 20. Understanding that career interruptions can have an impact on a candidate’s record of achievement, we encourage applicants to explain in their applications any impact that career interruptions have had on their record.

Employment Equity: ULethbridge is committed to creating an inclusive, diverse, and representative workforce that is reflective of the community we serve. The University welcomes all applications from qualified candidates, including all employment equity groups of Indigenous people, women, persons with disabilities, racialized individuals and persons of diverse gender and sexual orientation protected under the Alberta Human Rights Act. The University of Lethbridge invites applications from all qualified candidates; however, in accordance with Canadian immigration requirements, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given preference.

The University of Lethbridge is committed to providing an inclusive and barrier-free work environment, including all aspects of the hiring process. If you require support during the hiring process, please contact Human Resources at [email protected] so that accommodations can be put in place to support you.
