Job description

Notre Dame’s newly established Institute for Ethics and the Common Good (ECG) (formerly the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study) is hiring a two-year postdoctoral fellow to join a growing interdisciplinary research group in virtue ethics. The fellow will be in residence at the Institute from August 1, 2024 to June 30, 2026.

The fellow will:

  • Pursue a substantial research project aimed at either advancing understanding of a foundational question in virtue ethics or applying some aspect of virtue ethics to an emerging ethical problem.
  • Participate in weekly research seminars and events at the Institute for Ethics and the Common Good.
  • Work with Institute staff to develop and administer programming for the Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., Center for Virtue Ethics.
  • Work with a faculty mentor and committee to design and implement two conferences on virtue ethics over two years.

We welcome candidates with backgrounds in moral philosophy, moral theology, or social ethics. Candidates should have received a Ph.D. in one of these areas within the last five years, or be an advanced doctoral student nearing the completion of their dissertation.

The postdoctoral fellow will receive $80,000 per year and full benefits through the University of Notre Dame, as well as a $1,000 research account.

The postdoctoral fellow will have a primary appointment in the ECG, including shared office space. He/she will receive mentorship from the faculty and staff of the Institute and work closely with Clemens Sedmak, Professor of Social Ethics and Director of the Nanovic Institute for European Studies, to design and implement the conference programs.

The fellow will be expected to present once per semester at the ECG research seminar, participate in the other weekly research seminars and regularly scheduled retreats for the Institute’s fellows, and serve on committees designing the academic program for the Jenkins Center for Virtue Ethics. The postdoc will be in residence in South Bend for the duration of the fellowship.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, research proposal, writing sample, and two letters of reference. The research proposal (no more than 2 pages, single spaced) should discuss the research project(s) the fellow intends to work on during their time as a fellow. The cover letter should address what the candidate would contribute to an interdisciplinary ethics institute.

Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. (ET) July 7, 2024.
