Job description

The Department of the Classics at Harvard University seeks to appoint a tenure-track professor in Ancient Philosophy. Applications are invited from candidates specializing in any area of ancient Greek and Roman Philosophy whose work extends the boundaries of the discipline. We especially welcome applications from candidates whose research lies in any of the following areas, which may intersect: research that applies ancient Greek and / or Roman philosophy to contemporary ethical debates, and vice versa; comparative research that studies ancient Greek and / or Roman philosophy in dialogue with other philosophical traditions in the ancient and medieval world; interdisciplinary research that spans ancient Greek and / or Roman philosophy and other disciplines (e.g. women, gender, and sexuality studies; critical race studies; the natural sciences; and technology). A demonstration of strong commitment to teaching is crucial, as is the ability to capture the interest of a diverse student body. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels and will be expected to participate fully in the activities of the Department of the Classics and to collaborate with relevant colleagues in the Department of Philosophy. This search is being run concurrently with a separate tenure-track search in Ancient Philosophy in the Department of Philosophy and is part of an initiative to revitalize ancient philosophy at Harvard. Qualified applicants should apply to both positions.

We are committed to diversity in perspectives, in methods, and in our student and faculty populations. International applicants are welcome. The appointment is expected to begin on July 1, 2025. Applicants must have received the Ph.D. degree by the beginning of employment.
