Job description

The Philosophy Program at Bard College invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor to start in the Fall of 2025; the area of specialization is open. The Philosophy program at Bard is pluralistic and emphasizes historical approaches to philosophy, dialogue between philosophical traditions, and connections between philosophy and other disciplines. The program’s existing strengths are in the history of Western philosophy and in the areas of aesthetics, ethics, moral psychology, philosophy of science, and political philosophy.

We will give special consideration to candidates who strengthen our curriculum in any of the following areas: Africana, Asian, environmental, feminist, Latinx or Native American philosophies. The position includes teaching in Bard’s First-Year Seminar, an interdisciplinary introduction to humanistic inquiry completed by all incoming students. The successful candidate will bring enthusiasm and creativity to this course, which typically combines philosophical texts with readings from a wide range of other disciplines, including literature, religion, and the social sciences. Ability to teach an introductory course in symbolic logic is also appreciated, but not required. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. or expect to before taking up the position.
