Job description

The Department of Philosophy in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking to make one appointment, at either the level of Tenure-Track Assistant Professor or Tenured Associate Professor, to begin July 1, 2025 (although start date is negotiable). AOS and AOC open, but with an emphasis on medieval philosophy, early modern philosophy, aesthetics, philosophy of mind, philosophy of race and/or gender, metaphysics, and non-Western philosophy.

Significant promise of research excellence is a necessary condition for consideration, as is evidence of significant skills in teaching. The successful applicant will normally teach two courses per semester (graduate and/or undergraduate); will be involved in thesis supervision; and will have other standard non-teaching duties such as departmental administration, graduate and undergraduate mentorship, and participation in our department’s vigorous intellectual life.

In your application, please include a cover letter, writing sample, CV, and some evidence of significant skill in teaching and mentoring a broad base of graduate or undergraduate students. Also, please arrange for us to receive four letters of recommendation in support of your application.

We seek applicants who strive to promote access to resources and promote student success in a public university setting where students reflect the socioeconomic, racial, religious, and other diverse characteristics across the state. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, color, disability, gender, gender expression, gender identity, genetic information, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or status as a protected veteran.
