Job description

Reporting to the Director of Harpur Academic Advising, the Coordinator of Pre-Law Services leads Binghamton University's Pre-Law Advising efforts for students and recent alums interested in attending law school or pursuing legal careers. The Coordinator of Pre-Law Services works closely with faculty, advisors, and staff in a busy, collaborative environment. Responsibilities of the pre-law advisor are as follows:

Advising responsibilities:

  • Provide information on the curricular and co-curricular opportunities required to develop the skills and experiences required for success in law school
  • Provide advice to students applying to law schools, using rankings and other statistics
  • Assist advisees with the law school application process, including personal statements, letters of recommendation, LSATs, etc.
  • Provide support and offer relevant resources for underrepresented students
  • Advise on the financial aspects of law school, including costs and income expectations
  • Provide general academic advising to pre-law students, if appropriate
  • Serve as the departmental liaison to specific Harpur College departments

Creating connections:

  • Connect with pre-law student groups and faculty
  • Coordinate communication with the Harpur Law Council and other alumni in the legal field.  Participate in Harpur Law Council meetings several times per year, some which are held in New York City.
  • Maintain and promote a network of faculty, attorneys and law students as advising resources
  • Connect with pre-law advisors and law school admissions representatives
  • Create and lead the BU pre-law advisory council, made up of faculty, advisors, students and other campus personnel connected with law school advising and career readiness.
  • Participate in the Northeast Association of Pre-Law Advisors (NAPLA)

Programming:

  • Coordinate pre-law activities on campus, including speakers, outreach, training sessions, Work with the Harpur Dean's office to coordinate the HARP 300, a four-day winter session course held in NYC
  • Participate in new student orientation and admissions events
  • Coordinate and attend an annual trip to visit a New York City area law school, followed by a law alumni networking event
  • Develop and plan additional programming
  • Coordinate the Harpur Law Council's summer law internship programs

Administration:

  • Coordinate the annual campus Law Day with the Fleishman Center for Career and Professional Development
  • Collect law school admission data and prepare an annual pre-law report
  • Write dean's letters and process bar statements
  • Review and award pre-law scholarships

Supervision:

  • In addition to the primary duties, the pre-law advisor will take on the responsibility of supervising general advisors working with typical pre-law majors.

The successful candidate will be highly organized, self-disciplined, and able to work independently and as a part of a team. Candidates with a Ph.D. may have opportunities to teach as an adjunct in their discipline.


Requirements:

  • Master's Degree
  • 3-5 years of experience in higher education or legal setting
  • Understanding of, appreciation for, and proven experience working with diverse constituencies
  • Effective and professional communication skills, both written and oral
  • Ability to participate in evening/weekend programming (occasional travel will be necessary)
  • Exceptional public speaking and presentation skills
  • Proven ability to complete responsibilities in a professional and timely manner

Preferred:

  • Strong knowledge and deep understanding of college student population, particularly pre-law students
  • Demonstrated understanding of law school admissions
  • Experience with website maintenance, database management, and presentation software


Salary: $62,596
