Job description

The University of Louisville Philosophy Department is pleased to invite applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position, appointment beginning August 1, 2025.

The successful candidate will have a reduced teaching load of 3 courses per year for at least the first three years of the appointment, during which time they will build programming and academic opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students as well as for community engagement. Such programming may include internships, study abroad, alternative service breaks, campus events, community education, and so on. The exact form and extent of the initiative is flexible, and the successful candidate will have both autonomy to develop it in line with their own vision, and support from the Philosophy department and others to realize that vision. Some community outreach is expected. Some leadership experience is desirable and should be addressed in the cover letter.

Teaching responsibilities include both undergraduate and graduate courses; after the third year, the teaching load is expected to revert to the normal 5 courses per academic year. Starting salary $70,000; summer and winter teaching may be undertaken for additional pay. Candidates should be willing, with department support, to meet the department’s commitment to integrate the contributions of nonwhite and non-male philosophers, and non-Eurocentric philosophical traditions, into every course.

All requirements for the Ph.D. must be completed by June 30, 2025. Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States by August 1, 2025.

Review of applications will begin on September 30, 2024, and continue until the position is filled. First-round interviews will be conducted by video conference.
