Job description |
The Department of Philosophy at Carnegie Mellon University invites applications for a Teaching Track position to begin in Fall 2025. AOS: Political Philosophy and/or Ethics AOC: history of philosophy or mainstream (i.e. non-formal) epistemology. The department has particular teaching needs in core undergraduate courses in the mainstream philosophy curriculum including intro to philosophy, political philosophy, ethics (including applied courses such as engineering ethics, environmental ethics, AI ethics, and our Ethics, History, and Public Policy major’s senior capstone course), the history of philosophy, and mainstream (i.e. non-formal) and/or social epistemology. Teaching Track appointments are core faculty appointments with the potential to ascend in rank to Associate or Full Teaching Professor after undergoing successful review on the same timeline as Tenure Track faculty. Teaching Track faculty in Philosophy teach a 3-2 course load, usually including some introductory-level courses, and are expected to perform duties outside of teaching, which can include advising, directing a major, and departmental, college, and university-level service. Although Teaching Track faculty are evaluated primarily on the basis of their pedagogical contributions, they are also expected to maintain some research productivity, either within their AOS or in pedagogy, and these research activities are considered in retention and promotion decisions. Qualifications A successful applicant will have: · A PhD in Philosophy conferred by the start date; · A demonstrated interest in a career devoted primarily to teaching rather than research; · Evidence of teaching excellence and innovation; · Evidence of an ability to produce quality research related either to the AOS or pedagogy.
