Job description

Founded in 1962, the Department of Religion and Philosophy under the Academy of Chinese, History, Religion and Philosophy of Hong Kong Baptist University has been at the forefront of promoting the teaching and research of religion, philosophy and ethics in Hong Kong for many years. Our innovative curriculum offers a comprehensive exploration of both Chinese and Western religions. In addition, we incorporate philosophical and social science studies to deepen our understanding of various religious and philosophical traditions, as well as major ethical schools of thought. Collectively, our professors demonstrate a threefold expertise in religious studies, philosophy and ethics. Such expertise is also reflected in their great diversities of research interests and the broad range of courses offered by our colleagues.

We are now inviting candidates with excellent research potentials from the related fields to apply for the full-time PhD study under the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) to pursue their PhD studies at our Department. Those with first class undergraduate degrees and/or (predicted) distinctions in their MA/MPhil degrees are especially encouraged to apply.

Each Fellowship awardee will receive a monthly stipend of HK$28,100 (subject to review every year), and a conference/research-related travel allowance of HK$14,000 per year (for a maximum period of 3 years, subject to review every year). The 4-year tuition fee could also be waived, subject to satisfactory academic progress. (US$1 = HK$7.8)

Applicants interested in pursuing postgraduate studies (PhD and MPhil) may also apply to the University directly from 1 September 2024 to 1 December 2024 (Deadline of regular round) / 15 April 2025 (Deadline of clearing round). These applications will be evaluated exclusively by the Department. Successful applicants not receiving subsidies from the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme will be awarded research studentship based on their academic merit. The current studentship carries a monthly stipend of HK$18,550 (post-candidacy HK$19,070 for PhD). Part-time students are not eligible for studentships. Prospective applicants are advised to visit the department website (https://rel.hkbu.edu.hk/studying-at-rel/research-postgraduate-with-placement-information/admission) and contact department members before 1 December 2024 for more information about faculty interests and research areas.
