Position Summary

Primary job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

The College of Southern Nevada is currently seeking one (1) full-time tenure track philosophy instructor beginning fall 2025 semester. AOS and AOC: Open. The primary teaching assignment involves teaching our core courses: Introduction to Philosophy and Critical Thinking. May possibly be assigned a symbolic logic course and upper level (300 level) courses in intermediate critical thinking and/or professional ethics. Sections of other philosophy courses will be available as determined by departmental need. The candidate will be expected to teach a minimum of 15 credit hours per semester (i.e., a 5/5 teaching load) and keep five office hours per week. In addition, the candidate will be expected to participate in department and division meetings, college and department committees, and participatory governance activities. The candidate is expected to assume leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole and to leverage student support resources. The college also has a requirement of participation in ongoing professional development.

The teaching assignment may be multi-campus, and may include day, evening, or online (although the primary need is for on-ground daytime classes). The candidate must have the ability to work with a diverse student body, non-traditional students, and with underprepared students.

The ideal candidate for this position embraces the overall mission of the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) and is committed to excellence in teaching directed towards student learning and success through the study of philosophy and is committed to ongoing research in philosophy. The ideal candidate will also have an interest in and willingness to assist, lead or direct CSN's student philosophy club.

Required Qualifications

• Possess an M.A. in Philosophy from a regionally accredited college or university.

• Experience teaching college-level philosophy courses.

• Have a minimum of one year (two semesters) of experience teaching critical thinking or equivalent courses (e.g., Logic) at the college level within the last five years; OR a minimum of one year (two semesters) of experience teaching Introduction to Philosophy or equivalent at the college level within the last five years.

Preferred Qualifications

• Possess a Ph.D. in Philosophy from a regionally accredited college or university.

• Have a minimum of one year (two semesters) of experience teaching critical thinking or equivalent courses (e.g., Logic)at the college level within the last five years AND a minimum of one year (two semesters) of experience teaching Introduction to Philosophy at the college level within the last five years.

• Experience teaching philosophy at an regionally accredited community college.

• Evidence of research in philosophy (within the last five years), which consists of conference paper presentations and/or publications.

• Understanding of, and support for, the two-year college mission and ability to design curricula and learning activities that address diverse learning levels.

• Interest and willingness to participate in department, divisional, and cross-college committees, and activities.

• Possess philosophical research interests that meet the needs of the department. Currently, the department has needs in: Latin American/Latinx Philosophy, Native American/Indigenous Philosophy, Philosophy of Disability, and Ethics.

• Experience working with or serving as faculty advisor for philosophy club, ethics bowl, or similar student organizations.

Starting Salary Range

Initial salary placement is based on educational level and total years of full-time equivalent teaching experience. For example, for an instructor with a Master's degree, the salary range would be $58,046 to $74,304 annually. The entire salary range is up to $89,166 annually with a Doctorate and 10 years' experience. A maximum of 10 years of experience will be considered for initial salary placement purposes.
