Job description

The Blog of the American Philosophical Association reports on issues of concern to APA members, including professional philosophers and philosophically inclined members of society. It covers multiple topics of interest such as: research, diversity and inclusion, teaching, work/life balance, and public philosophy. The Blog of the American Philosophical Association is funded by the American Philosophical Association.

The Blog of the American Philosophical Association currently seeks a copy editor who will work as a part of the copy editing team.  Here are the responsibilities that the copy editor will fulfill:

  • Article Review and Editing: You will receive articles each week.  Most articles will require basic proofreading such as correcting typos, ensuring proper use of punctuation, adjusting typographical quirks, such as converting straight quotes to curly quotes, and confirming alignment with Chicago style and our in-house guidelines.
  • Content Restructuring: Occasionally, articles may require more substantial edits, including sentence restructuring for clarity and grammatical correctness.  Your role is to refine content while preserving the author’s meaning and voice.
  • Ensuring Style Compliance:  Each article must be checked against the APA Blog’s minimal in-house style guidelines, which is Chicago style.
  • Coordination with Series Editors: In rare cases where articles are submitted with significant writing issues, you will work with the relevant series editor or their overseer to request revisions.  The copy editor is not responsible for rewriting poorly constructed work but will ensure that proper revisions are made before publication.
  • Post Scheduling: Once articles are edited, you will use WordPress to schedule them for publication, referencing the blog calendar for appropriate posting times.

The workload will fluctuate, with some weeks busier than others. On average, expect to handle around several articles per week.  If you're an experienced copy editor with a keen eye for detail and an appreciation for philosophical content, we encourage you to apply and contribute to the APA Blog's mission of fostering thoughtful dialogue in the philosophical community.

Here are the requirements:

  • Graduate degree or working towards a graduate degree
  • Experience with writing, editing, and working with others
  • Technologically Competent
  • MUST BE AN APA MEMBER IN GOOD STANDING
  • Attention to Detail: A strong command of grammar, punctuation, and style, particularly the Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Editorial Judgment: The ability to make decisions about when to adjust content for clarity and when to return work for further revisions.
  • Time Management: Articles are typically due within a week, though it is recommended to edit pieces within 48 hours of receipt to stay on schedule.
  • Familiarity with WordPress: Basic familiarity with WordPress is a plus, though the scheduling interface is user-friendly and easy to learn.

This is considered a part-time role.  You will receive a quarterly stipend for this position.

We will contact candidates by email to coordinate an interview.
