We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's student body as a Lecturer of the Philosophy Department beginning in the 2025-2026 academic year. This position is eligible for renewal and promotions. The Department of Philosophy at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is a pluralistic department that seeks candidates who are outstanding teachers. Area of specialization preferred: Bioethics, or cognate fields. Area of competence preferred: Medical Ethics, Health Law and Policy, or Environmental Ethics.
The successful candidate will teach multiple sections of lower division courses such as Critical Thinking; Introduction to Philosophy; Ethics, Happiness, and the Good Life; and Ethics, Health, and Culture as well as contribute to UTRGV's MS in Bioethics program. The mode of instruction for this job will be in class or online depending on the needs of the department.
Candidates are preferred who can inspire students to pursue a major in Philosophy or an MS in Bioethics and contribute to our strengths in one or more of these areas: Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Technology, Applied Ethics, Latin American Philosophy, Borderlands Philosophy/Spirituality, Social and Political Philosophy, Critical Philosophy of Race/Gender/Class, and/or Religious Studies. Since UTRGV is a Hispanic Serving Institution with a 90% Hispanic student body, we are also interested in candidates with relevant experience and/or knowledge of teaching bilingual, bicultural, or biliterate students. Bilingual (Spanish-English) language competence would be especially desirable. We are a multi-campus university, and the successful candidate may be asked to teach on one or more campuses, though great efforts are made to minimize travel.

The Department of Philosophy at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is pluralistic with research strengths in Mexican/Latin American Philosophy, Law, Social and Political Philosophy, Bioethics, and Philosophy of Science and Technology. We offer an MS in Bioethics, a BA in Philosophy, a Pre-Law Concentration, and Minors in Philosophy and Religious Studies. The Department currently contains twenty-three full-time faculty.
Minimum Qualifications
PhD in Philosophy or closely related field, (e.g. the history of ideas) from an accredited university. ABDs will be considered but degree must be conferred by August 31, 2025.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
