Position description

The UCI Center for Knowledge, Technology and Society (CKTS) invites applications for a 32-month postdoctoral scholar, starting in January 2025, with a starting annual salary of $66,737. This position is part of the ‘Educating for Virtuous Intellectual Character’ (EVIC) project that is led by Professor Duncan Pritchard. EVIC is funded by the Educating Character Initiative (ECI), a part of the Program for Leadership and Character at Wake Forest University.

EVIC will involve a transformative expansion of the innovative Anteater Virtues campuswide project at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). This project is devoted to bringing educating for virtuous intellectual character into the heart of the curriculum of a leading R1 public university with a diverse student body. In addition, EVIC will develop these new materials to serve other educational audiences, such as in high schools, community colleges, prison education programs, and in other four-year colleges. Finally, the research results of the project will be disseminated in high-profile articles, thereby helping to advance the theoretical case for educating for virtuous intellectual character.
The EVIC postdoctoral scholar will be appointed in the UCI Humanities Center and affiliated with the CKTS, as well as the Department of Philosophy. The successful candidate will have a PhD in a relevant field (such as education or philosophy), ideally with knowledge and experience that is directly suited to these project activities (such as experience of working on pedagogical initiatives), and will be eager to work in a collaborative and interdisciplinary setting. The postdoctoral scholar will be mentored throughout by Professor Pritchard and will assist him in the day-to-day activities associated with project implementation.

Duties include:

  • Working with relevant scholars to develop new module content.
  • Setting up and overseeing the filming and editing of module content.
  • Integrating supporting educational materials into the modules.
  • Running faculty and graduate training workshops on educating for virtuous intellectual character.
  • Setting up the public (non-UCI specific) versions of the modules, targeted at specific educational audiences, and supplementing them with supporting educational materials.
  • Corresponding with, and in some cases traveling to, partner initiatives worldwide to learn about the latest developments in virtuous intellectual character education.
  • Writing research papers on issues arising from the project, including a survey (co-authored with Professor Pritchard) of contemporary virtuous intellectual character education initiatives.
  • Collaborating with the other scholars on the wider Anteater Virtues project team.
