Job description

The Philosophy Department at the State University of New York at Oswego invites applications to fill a full time Assistant Professor position in ethics.  This is a tenure track position.

Compensation: Minimum salary $63,000, commensurate with experience plus full New York State benefits package.

Description of Responsibilities:  

 Area of Specialization: Ethics or Political Philosophy.  Area of Competence: Open.

The Assistant Professor of Philosophy will have a strong research trajectory in ethics, as well as relevant teaching experience in applied ethics.  The department prefers the candidate to have experience or interest in teaching ethics for information technology and business ethics. In addition to these courses, the Assistant Professor may teach a variety of courses within the department, including social and political philosophy, philosophy and feminism, and courses which serve to broaden the diversity of the curriculum of our department (e.g., philosophy of race). The successful candidate would serve a leadership role in the recently established Philosophy, Politics, and Economics major housed in the Philosophy Department. Normal semester teaching responsibilities will be one large course and two smaller courses. Student advising, working with students on improving writing skills, and university service are also expected.

Require Qualifications

PhD in Philosophy at time of appointment or ABD in Philosophy with scheduled defense date.

Strong research trajectory in ethics or political philosophy. Relevant teaching experience in some related courses in ethics and applied ethics. Demonstrated commitment to cultural diversity and the ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.


Preferred Qualifications

Ability to teach a variety of courses, such as business ethics, information ethics/ethics in information and communication technology, social/political philosophy, philosophy and feminism, and courses which serve to broaden the diversity of the curriculum of our department, such as philosophy of race.

Description of Department:  SUNY Oswego's philosophy department is a vibrant community composed of collegial, active researchers who work in a diverse range of areas. Faculty members in this department hold bi-monthly workshops in which faculty members present their research, run an annual lecture series—known as the Steinkraus Series—where philosophers outside of the community discuss recent work, and are regular participants in conferences and workshops, including conferences and workshops held in upstate New York. The department also has strong interdisciplinary relationships with a number of other departments on campus. We offer three different majors and two minors and serve a wide range of students with diverse interests.    

Description of Oswego: Oswego, New York is a waterfront community located on the shores of Lake Ontario. It is home to historic sites, multiple public parks, family-friendly residential areas, and a growing downtown commercial area. Oswego also features affordable housing and is close to the Finger Lakes, the Adirondack Mountains, and larger urban cities including Rochester and Syracuse.
