Job description

The role

The Faculty of Arts, Law and Social Sciences is delighted to announce a new opening at the Lecturer level to drive interdisciplinary research and partnership collaboration with the Bristol Digital Futures Institute (BDFI). BDFI is committed to changing how we think about ‘digital futures’ and how we create technologies for inclusive, prosperous and sustainable societies through interdisciplinary collaboration. With investment through the Research England Research Partnership Investment Fund, BDFI has bespoke leading-edge research, education and co-creation facilities that are part of the Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus. In making this new appointment we aim to diversify the BDFI portfolio of expertise, building on previous appointments we have made. We would like to add to our expertise in particular areas such as AI and ethics, philosophy of AI and the philosophical foundations of machine learning, creative industries, creative technologies (including VR/AR/XR), digital humanities, game studies, screen studies, digital heritage and interactive storytelling, but we also welcome applicants with interests in other areas of arts and humanities-centred approaches to digital futures that would contribute to the BDFI. We welcome arts and humanities applications from Anthropology & Archaeology, Classics & Ancient History, English and creative writing, Film & Television, History of Art, History, Liberal Arts, Music, Philosophy, Religion and Theology, Theatre. The successful candidates will have a permanent ‘home’ in whichever is the most appropriate School or Department. However for the first five years these appointments will be seconded to the BDFI and play a critical role in shaping the intellectual agenda of the Institute at an exciting time in its development.

What will you be doing?

As a BDFI Lecturer you will:

  • Actively support the development and growth of BDFI
  • Grow a portfolio of excellent interdisciplinary research on any aspect of digital futures.
  • Work across the arts and humanities with engineering colleagues to build interdisciplinary capacity.
  • Work with 26 BDFI partners in government, industry and civil society.
  • Actively promote BDFI.
  • Build strong links to the relevant School/s in the Faculty and beyond.

You should apply if

For the lecturer role:

  • You want to be part of a thriving interdisciplinary community of researchers and partners creating new knowledge and methods to proactively shape digital futures.
  • You have a strong track record of research related to Digital Futures (appropriate to career stage) and clear plans for future research in this area linked to one or more of the disciplinary areas listed above.
  • You have some experience and/or commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • You are committed to co-produced research, working with a variety of partners and across sectors.
  • You have experience of University level teaching and administration.
