Assistant professor, Philosophy

Job Summary

The University of the Fraser Valley’s Department of Philosophy invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Philosophy with an expected start date of August 1, 2025. Research and teaching interests must include Global philosophy, Comparative Philosophy, and/or Asian Philosophy. The department is looking for someone to teach Chinese philosophy and Philosophies of India in addition to a range of lower-level introductory philosophy courses, including Critical Thinking and Introduction to Metaphysics and Epistemology. Applicants who can also teach Philosophy of Religion and/or Philosophy of Law will be prioritized. The successful candidate will have completed, or be near completion of, a PhD in Philosophy with an established portfolio of research and/or teaching experience in Global philosophy, Comparative philosophy, and/or Asian philosophy.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will be prepared to:

• teach Chinese philosophy and Philosophies of India;
• teach a range of lower-level introductory philosophy courses, such as Philosophy of Religion, Philosophy of Law, Critical Thinking, and Introduction to Metaphysics and Epistemology;
• develop new and innovative courses that strengthen and diversify our current offerings; 
• employ an inclusive, internationalized and decolonized pedagogical approach in their teaching;
• communicate effectively and respectfully with others, including international and Indigenous students;
• have an ongoing research program and a commitment to professional development;
• be collegial, energetic and innovative;
• engage in service work for the Department, College of Arts, and the university as a whole.

• a sample upper-level Philosophy course syllabus;
• a list of Philosophy courses that you feel qualified to teach (esp. in Chinese philosophy, Indian philosophy, and other non-Western philosophical traditions);
• a diversity statement that highlights past experiences and activities, as well as future plans to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion. This can include a statement of your experience being part of an underrepresented group or of how your attention to diversity actively influences your teaching, research, and/or scholarship;
• copies of recent teaching evaluations;

*Shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide three letters of reference (with at least one letter focusing on teaching) at time of interview
