Job description

The Wabash College Department of Philosophy invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor to begin July 1, 2025. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in philosophy at the time of appointment. The teaching load is 3/3. The candidate will be expected to co-teach two interdisciplinary seminar courses in philosophy, politics, and economics (PPE) in addition to teaching a course in the philosophy of commerce and additional courses in ethics or social/political philosophy at the intermediate and advanced undergraduate levels. Ability to teach environmental philosophy will be considered a strong asset. The co-taught, interdisciplinary seminars in PPE include one section of the course that introduces students to the PPE major and one section of the major’s capstone senior seminar. These core courses are each co-taught by two instructors from the philosophy, political science, and economics departments. We provide mentoring in teaching and research for visiting faculty as well as support for conducting research. We are particularly interested in candidates who are committed to excellence in undergraduate teaching, have an appreciation for the broad intellectual community of an excellent liberal arts college, and have experience working with diverse undergraduate student populations.

In the midst of a strategic transformation to advance the success of first-generation students, students of color, and students from low-income families, Wabash College is committed to attracting and effectively supporting an academically and culturally diverse faculty. Approximately 25% of our students are federal Pell Grant recipients, one-third of our students are first-generation college students, and about 20% of our students identify as domestic students of color. Home to the Malcolm X Institute of Black Studies for more than fifty years and a newly launched Latino Community Center, Wabash College is a top-60 Liberal Arts College according to U.S. News, and is a member of Colleges That Change Lives.

Application review will begin on January 20, 2025 and continue until the position is filled. To apply, go to www.wabash.edu/employment and click the “Apply Now” button. Applications should include a cover letter, curriculum vita, teaching philosophy, sample syllabi, email addresses for three persons who will submit confidential letters of recommendation electronically, and unofficial undergraduate and graduate transcripts. Questions regarding the position should be directed to Dr. Matthew Carlson, Philosophy Department Chair, at [email protected]. Application questions may be directed to Ms. Dawn Hoffman, Academic Administrative Coordinator, at [email protected]. Please note that Wabash College does not provide H-1B or other immigration case sponsorship for short-term positions.
