The Department of Philosophy invites applications for a full-time, non-renewable (one-year) Assistant Teaching Professor position with a start date of August 2025. This is a 9-month appointment. Information about Program and College The Department of Philosophy is one of 17 academic units in the College of Arts and Sciences. The vision for our College, aligned with the university’s strategic plan, is to ensure that our students graduate career-ready to meet the world’s challenges, and that our faculty research and creative activity contribute to the public good. We achieve this through robust collaboration across departmental boundaries, with particular attention given to increasing experiential learning for our undergraduate and graduate students and connecting our scholarly and creative work to the needs of our region. The Philosophy Department at BGSU has an international reputation for its focus on applied philosophy, which includes ethics, meta-ethics, ethical analysis of public policy, and political philosophy. The Department offers both a major and a minor in philosophy and is the administrative home to the interdisciplinary major in Philosophy, Politics, Economics, and Law (PPEL). Essential Functions The primary responsibility of this position is to teach core courses in PPEL, such as the history of political economy, and formal methods. The successful candidate will also teach undergraduate courses in philosophy, (e.g., introduction to ethics, introduction to logic, history of philosophy). Responsibilities also include providing service at the department, college, or university level. Minimum Qualifications Ph.D. in Philosophy or related discipline (e.g., Political Science, Economics). ABDs are eligible to apply but the applicant must satisfy all the requirements for the doctoral degree before August 1, 2025. Experience teaching undergraduate courses in PPEL as the instructor of record or as a Graduate Teaching Assistant. Evidence of effective teaching (e.g., student evaluations, peer or supervisor observation) at the undergraduate level. Preferred Qualifications Experience as instructor of record for philosophy courses, including introduction to logic, introduction to ethics, and particularly history of philosophy. Experience teaching an undergraduate class in PPEL as the instructor of record.
