Job description

The Department of Philosophy and the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) Program at the University at Buffalo is inviting applications for the position of Postdoctoral Associate under the supervision of Assistant Professor Alexandra Oprea.

This position will be supported by the Mellon Grant “Inclusive Immigration and Democratic Revival in a Rust Belt City” and primarily involves conducting research, teaching, and assisting the project team with community engagement activities as specified in the job description below.

Listed below are the broad areas of responsibility within the purview of the Postdoc, including but not limited to:

  • Research: The candidate is expected to have an active research agenda within democratic theory, broadly understood, and an interest in the intersection of immigration and democracy.
  • Teaching: Two courses per year, at least one of which includes an experiential learning component on the theme “Immigration and Democracy”
  • Service: Contributing to the success of our community engagement work, as well as assisting with organizing two academic workshops.

Expected start date: August 1st, 2025

Duration: 2 years (until July 31st, 2027) 

Minimum Qualifications: PhD in Philosophy, Political Science, or related discipline; expected completion by August 2025.

Preferred Qualifications:  The ideal candidate will have training in or experience with community-engaged research, particularly one of the following: conducting interviews with leaders of civic organizations, organizing focus groups with community members, and planning a deliberative democratic forum.

Salary:  $60,000/ year
