Postdoctoral Fellow (3yr) and Researcher (2yr) - Philosophy of Science

One three-year Postdoctoral Research Fellowship and one two-year Researcher position in philosophy of science are available at the Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas, University of Oslo. 

The positions are associated with the philosophy of science project AssemblingLife funded by the European Research Council (ERC).

We are looking for candidates whose research falls broadly within one or more of the following areas: philosophy of science, philosophy of biology, philosophy of (bio)physics, philosophy of (bio)chemistry, philosophy of nanoscience, theoretical philosophy, and/or within one or more of the natural science fields relevant for the project.

Central topics in the project regard our understanding of scientific explanation in the life sciences; more specifically, how do explanations invoking self-assembly and self-organization fit with causal and mechanistic theories of life science explanation? How should we understand the relations between biophysics explanations and biological explanations of self-assembly and self-organization phenomena? And how may the increasing insight into self-assembly and self-organization in the life sciences influence our philosophical ideas of reduction, emergence and the relation between levels and scales?
