Job description

The Department of Philosophy and the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seek to appoint one or more non-tenure track Teaching Assistant Professors as core faculty members in the PPE Program, to begin July 1, 2025. The initial appointment will be for a term of two years with the possibility of renewal for a third year.

The Philosophy, Politics & Economics (PPE) Program is a rapidly growing interdisciplinary program that focuses on the intersection of the three disciplines in its title, where concerns for efficiency, and commitments to rights, justice, and liberty, are applied to social and political institutions. The PPE Program houses the international Philosophy, Politics & Economics Society, provides a regular influx of faculty on multi-year non-tenure track positions (which the program then works to place), offers an undergraduate PPE Minor, and runs an active extracurricular program full of workshops, speaker events, reading groups, and salons. The PPE Program is currently exploring the possibility of either a PPE major or a five-year combined BA/MA PPE degree, developing a distinctive study abroad experience with two other universities, and cultivating an alumni/ae network and internship program. We will also be introducing a newly-funded PPE Distinguished Lecture Series. The PPE Program is committed to integrating abstract work in philosophy, political science, and economics with the informed understanding of practical applications of that work.

The successful candidate will teach two undergraduate PPE-related courses per semester and be actively involved in the PPE Program, helping to organize and run key aspects of its active extracurricular programming. These candidates should have an AOS in social and political philosophy, or another area directly related to PPE. They should also be able and willing to teach courses that count toward the PPE minor, including the “Gateway” course that introduces students to the tools of PPE and the “Capstone” seminar, in which graduating PPE minors engage with cutting-edge work in PPE and complete individual research projects. Further information about the PPE Program and its courses are available at ppe.unc.edu.

Applicants should submit the following materials: a cover letter (which speaks directly to the candidate’s qualifications and enthusiasm for contributing to the PPE Program and for teaching PPE course), CV, writing sample, and evidence concerning quality of teaching. Candidates will also be asked to provide the names and contact details of a minimum of three and a maximum of five professional references at the time of application.

This position is open until filled. Applications received by February 24, 2025 will get full consideration. We will try to give the same consideration for applications that are received after February 24, 2025, but we cannot guarantee it. We will continue our review of applications until the position is filled. Please direct questions regarding the position to Kori Hensell, [email protected].
