Job description

This is a 2.5-year, full-time position, funded as a part of the European Research Council starting grant project "Corporate Moral Progress", with Kenneth Silver as the PI. (The grant runs until May 1, 2028, so the position can run until then.)

The focus of the project is on how to think about corporations as distinct agents within society. (The debate over 'corporate moral responsibility' or 'corporate personhood' within business ethics and management scholarship.) Whereas the PI and current Postdoc have backgrounds in the philosophy of action, feminist philosophy, and social ontology; the project would benefit from taking on a postdoctoral fellow with a different background who might bring a new dimension to the project. We're happy to consider, and indeed will prioritize, far-ranging potential connections by scholars with quite different backgrounds.

For example, we are eager to find a candidate able to engage in empirical work or with a facility for experimental methodologies, who might be interested in using those methods to formulate and test ideas around the topic of corporate personhood or social attitudes towards corporations.

Alternatively, someone with a strong background within the philosophy of law might help in our considering appropriate corporate criminal punishment.   Scholars engaged in moral psychology, moral education, or moral progress might also make for a good fit.

The aim is to choose a candidate with their own research stream, yet capable of developing a number of projects within the scope of the grant, both alone and in collaboration with the other members of the team. PhD should be secure by the time of appointment.

The project is housed within the Trinity Business School at Trinity College Dublin. As such, preference will be given to candidates that communicate a willingness if not enthusiasm for working within a business school. However, no previous experience of this kind is necessary, as the hope is to bring interdisciplinary tools to bear on the project.

This is a research position. At maximum, it would involve teaching a pre-developed class once or perhaps twice across those years.

Candidates chosen for interviews will be provided with more details of the grant, and the interview will focus on considering ways the candidate could contribute to it (rather than all applicants writing a one-use document to this effect).

Pay: €42,500 (plus pension, which vests after 2 years) - This is the first point on the Postdoctoral Research salary scale, which increases annually.

To apply, send a CV and cover letter to Kenneth Silver ([email protected]) before or on July 1st. Late applicants welcome, though it cannot be guaranteed that they will be equally considered. References may be requested at the interview stage.

Start date negotiable.
