  • Base salary range: Level B, $118,150 – $139,812 p.a. plus 17% superannuation.

About the area

The School of Humanities offers a rich intellectual environment spanning Philosophy, History, European Languages, English and Literary Studies, and Gender Studies. As well as undergraduate and postgraduate programs, the School supports an active research program. The School offers an undergraduate major in Philosophy and contributes a significant amount of the curriculum to the Bachelor of Human Rights and the Bachelor of Philosophy, Politics, and Economics.

The successful applicant will produce high-quality research in moral or political philosophy (broadly construed), and undertake tutorial teaching, lecturing, unit coordination, and student supervision in collaboration with colleagues and under the direction of the Head of School of Humanities. The applicant must be motivated to contribute to the academic environment of the School and have a strong teaching portfolio within Philosophy (relative to opportunity).

About the opportunity

  • Conduct high-impact research in moral or political philosophy (broadly construed), with potential specialisations including areas like applied ethics, bioethics, critical thinking, decision theory, epistemology, ethical theory, feminist philosophy, game theory, metaethics, the philosophy of economics, political philosophy, and/or rational choice theory.
  • Deliver high-quality teaching across a wide range of philosophical topics, coordinate units, and supervise Honours, Masters, and Doctoral students; contribute to curriculum development and assessment design.
  • Participate actively in the academic and collegial life of the School and University, including governance, strategic planning, and administrative duties, while supporting diversity and inclusion initiatives.

About you

  • A PhD in Philosophy.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to produce high-quality research in moral or political philosophy (broadly construed).
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness (relative to opportunity) to secure external research funding.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to develop, co-ordinate, and teach high-quality undergraduate and honours units at all levels in Philosophy in the general area of moral and political philosophy, broadly construed.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate well to staff and students at all levels and evidence of a commitment to equity and diversity principles.
