The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Christopher Newport University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Philosophy, effective August 17, 2015. Applicants must be committed to undergraduate education and demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching and research with undergraduates. The AOS is Continental Philosophy. The AOC is Ethics. A record of scholarly accomplishment and teaching experience preferred. The nominal teaching load for tenure track appointments is 3-3. The Ph.D. in Philosophy or a closely related field is required for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. In some cases, exceptionally well-qualified candidates may be considered for appointment at a higher rank and ABD candidates who will not hold the Ph.D. by the time of appointment may be considered for appointment at the rank of Instructor. Phi Beta Kappa membership is highly desirable. The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies consists of 12 full-time faculty, each dynamic teacher/scholar is committed to expanding and enhancing the awareness of thought traditions across the centuries and across the globe. CNU's Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies is distinctive for its departmental integration of the study of Philosophy in conjunction with Religious Studies. Our multifaceted and comprehensive curriculum prepares students for admittance to top graduate programs across the country. CNU is committed to outstanding teaching and learning, undergraduate education, and the liberal studies core; the University is seeking to shelter a Phi Beta Kappa chapter. The Fall 2014 freshman class of 1,225 students was selected from nearly 8,000 admission applications, and presented high school GPA and SAT score middle 50% ranges of 3.5-4.0 and 1080-1230, respectively. Capital improvements (approaching $1 billion) on the beautiful, 260-acre campus, located between historic Colonial Williamsburg and the ocean resort of Virginia Beach, integrate the University’s liberal arts vision, nurturing mind, body, and spirit.
