Tenure-track Faculty Position in Sustainability and Human Well-Being

The School of Sustainability at Arizona State University invites applications for a tenure-track position, at the assistant professor level, in the field of Sustainability and Human Well-being. Many economic, social and ecological factors contribute to human well-being. Nevertheless, most commonly reported indicators of well-being fail to adequately capture its multi-dimensional, dynamic, and system-dependent nature. Sustainability requires that well-being, however measured, be maintained or improved across generations. We invite applications from scholars engaged in conceptual or applied research to improve the conceptualization and measurement of human well-being in the context of sustainability.

Required qualifications: Successful candidates must have an earned doctorate at the time of appointment. Applicants may come from a variety of social science, natural science, engineering, or humanities backgrounds, but must have a demonstrable expertise in at least one of the fields of study with relevance to the conceptualization and/or measurement of well-being, such as (but not limited to) psychology, economics, ethics, political philosophy, sociology, gender studies, or planning. Desired qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates with: 1) a strong record of scholarly achievement and publications; 2) experience with university-level teaching, mentoring, and other educational activities; 3) experience working on interdisciplinary teams; 4) strong communication skills; 5) a capacity to deliver on the design principles of ASU’s New American University (see http://newamericanuniversity.asu.edu); and 6) a compelling vision for continued research and strong potential to support this scholarship. The position will include teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses; collaborating with interdisciplinary sustainability research teams within the school, across campus, and in the wider community; and performing school, university, professional, and community service.

The School of Sustainability is the first of its kind: A comprehensive degree-granting program with a transdisciplinary focus on finding real-world solutions to environmental, economic, and social sustainability challenges (see http://schoolofsustainability.asu.edu).  Established in 2006, the School is part of the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability. Our mission is to educate a new generation of scholars and practitioners and create innovative modes of scholarship by bringing together people from multiple disciplines, leaders and stakeholders to develop effective solutions to the most pressing sustainability challenges. The School of Sustainability takes a transdisciplinary approach in its curriculum, addressing a broad spectrum of global challenges, including: 1) energy, materials, and technology; 2) water quality and scarcity; 3) international development; 4) sustainable ecosystems; 5) social transformations; 6) food and food system sustainability, and; 7) policy and governance.

To review and apply to this position, please visit:  http://apply.interfolio.com/26703. The application deadline is November 7, 2014, if not filled, reviews will occur every two weeks thereafter until the search is closed. Applicants must submit: 1) a cover letter that addresses the above criteria in the context of sustainability; 2) a Curriculum Vitae; 3) a statement of research accomplishments and interdisciplinary experience, and future goals for both; 4) a statement of teaching philosophy and experience, and; 5) the name, phone number, address, and e-mail address of three references. Only electronic applications will be accepted. Any inquiries should be addressed to [email protected].

A background check is required for employment. Arizona State University is a VEVRAA Federal Contractor and an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will be considered without regard to race, color, sex, religion, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other basis protected by law (see https://www.asu.edu/aad/manuals/acd/acd401.html and https://www.asu.edu/titleIX/)
