About Fashion Institute of Technology:

The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), an internationally renowned college of art and design, business and technology, of the State University of New York, invites nominations and applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Social Sciences of the School of Liberal Arts.

The Fashion Institute of Technology, a part of the State University of New York, has been a leader in career education in art, design, business, and technology for nearly 70 years. The School of Liberal Arts provides the foundation for an FIT degree, committed to providing a broad-based general education for FIT students, integrating traditional academic study with career preparation. Home to seven academic departments, 17 minors, and two interdisciplinary majors, our faculty prepare students to become reflective, critical, and engaged citizens of the world. The Department of Social Sciences seeks to create and nurture an environment of innovative, interdisciplinary learning that enables students to develop diverse and multicultural perspectives so that they will be better prepared to function in a complex and global society. Courses are offered in economics, history, philosophy, political science, psychology, and sociology. Due to this multidisciplinary composition, the Department of Social Sciences is uniquely positioned to offer many and varied courses designed to increase students’ understanding and appreciation of the historical and contemporary diversity of national and global society.

 Job Description:

The Department of Social Sciences seeks a full-time philosopher with research interests in ethics, aesthetics, or non-Western philosophical traditions to teach philosophy courses in Ethics, and Informal Logic, and to develop new courses of interest to business, technology, liberal arts, and design students such as specialized courses in business ethics, aesthetics, or the philosophy of film and media. The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate strong technology and communication skills with a commitment to liberal arts education. S/he will perform departmental and university service and be an integral member of the Department of Social Sciences. The candidate is also expected to contribute to the Department’s goal of promoting student success and student engagement in general education.

 Requirements:

  • Demonstrate evidence of global awareness and understand and appreciate cultural differences.

Instructional Design

  • Demonstrate a commitment to updating existing courses as well as creating new courses.

Learning Enrichment

  • Embrace a variety of teaching techniques in an effort to maximize student learning.

Professionalism

  • Engage actively in scholarly activities.
  • Demonstrate promise as an innovative thinker and researcher in the field of philosophy.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to working in professional capacities outside of the Department of Social Sciences.

Technology

  • Leverage advances in technology to yield benefits in the classroom.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. or Ed.D in philosophy. (ABDs will be considered with the understanding that the terminal degree is awarded prior to granting of tenure). Evidence of scholarly achievement, professional activities and teaching experience is required.

 Additional Information:

This is a full-time, tenure-track position beginning in Fall 2015. Review of applications will commence immediately and continue until the position is filled.

The salary and appointment rank will be based on education level and experience.
