Job description

AOS contemporary aesthetics. AOC Teaching competency: philosophy of art, philosophy of
literature, and or philosophy of film. The typical teaching load is six undergraduate courses per academic year (three per semester), including introductory, general education, and upper level offerings. Some summer teaching may be available. The Philosophy Department currently has eighteen tenure-line faculty and four lecturers and offers strong major and minor programs. We are a pluralistic department, open to many philosophical traditions.


Required qualifications
Ph.D. dissertation must be in contemporary aesthetics. We require successful completion of all coursework required for Ph.D. in philosophy. Evidence of competence to link aesthetics with social justice issues (in research, teaching, and /or activism) is required. We also require promise for excellence in teaching.


Preferred qualifications
We strongly prefer a Ph.D. in philosophy in hand. We prefer candidates who have successfully taught philosophy of art, philosophy of literature, and or philosophy of film. We prefer candidates with demonstrated success in teaching and advising students from diverse backgrounds. We also prefer candidates with artistic performance experience. We prefer demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in and beyond the department. We prefer the demonstrated ability to work in an interdisciplinary context, including collaborating with other relevant departments and/or programs. In your cover letter and/or other documentation please tell us specifically how your work in aesthetics is related to social justice and/or community building, using examples if possible.


The University of Dayton, with a College of Arts and Sciences and professional schools of
Business Administration, Education and Health Sciences, Engineering, and Law has a full-time undergraduate enrollment of approximately 8,000 undergraduate students.
