Job description

The University of Utah invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Humanities. The Dean will serve for a five-year renewable term, commencing July 1, 2015. The College is composed of seven academic departments—Communication, English, History, Languages and Literature, Linguistics, Philosophy, and Writing and Rhetoric Studies—along with eight interdisciplinary centers and seven interdisciplinary programs. It also collaborates in research and instruction with departments and colleges throughout the University. With a total budget of over $43m, it is home to more than180 tenure and career track faculty, 2500 undergraduate majors, and 400 graduate students. The Dean will lead a diverse and collegial faculty that includes internationally prominent scholars and educators and a dedicated, professional staff.

The successful candidate must have a distinguished record as a scholar and educator and demonstrated leadership and administrative skills. He/she should have innovative ideas for supporting enhanced student engagement, creativity, and discovery, and for translating student success into new educational and career opportunities. He/she will be expected to promote the success of the College through careful stewardship of the College’s resources, fundraising, and support for extramurally funded research. A commitment to the role of faculty in college governance, dedication to community-engaged learning, and the ability to build loyalty and support among alumni and in the local community are also required.
