Job description

The Centre for Ethical, Social, and Cultural (ESC) Risk is an academic consulting program, based out of the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute at St. Michael’s Hospital (SMH) in Toronto, Canada. The Centre for ESC Risk engages in research and analysis in order to identify pathways to address ethical, social, and cultural risks in global health and development.

The Centre is looking for Senior Research Associate(s). The Senior Research Associate(s) will be responsible for supporting the ESC Program’s active portfolio of projects, by providing in-depth research, critical analysis, high-quality & efficient synthesis, and providing timely recommendations on a wide range of topics related to ethical, social, and cultural issues in global health and development research.

This is a non-clinical research position, intended for candidates with PhD or equivalent level of training and several years of post-academic work experience (preferably in a delivery-focused environment). The ideal candidate should have a specialization in an area related to public health, global health or global development, in addition to substantial experience in bioethics/applied ethics/research ethics. 

The successful candidate will operate in a leadership role in terms of consult (project) delivery. The candidate will work with the entire team to support and develop specific products and deliverables on a project-by-project basis (e.g., slide decks, briefing notes, briefing papers, in-depth reports, etc) as related to the Centre’s portfolio of work for the client(s).

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD training in public health, global health, global development related discipline.
  • Experience and training in bioethics, applied ethics, research ethics or philosophy preferred.
  • Five years post-academic work experience required, with preference for a delivery-focused environment
  • Proven experience in: preparation of manuscripts, data analysis, publishing in scientific journals (preferred as lead or senior author), presenting independent research findings (at national and international venues)
  • Deep understanding of applicable research methods and process (developed expertise)
  • Excellent organization and planning skills, project management skills with attention to detail and effective problem-solving
  • Excellent writing and communication skills (ability to tailor to different audiences)
  • Excellent interpersonal and managerial skills
  • Supervisory and mentorship experience
  • Experience working in a Global Health or Global Development context
  • Experience in a consulting or other client-service environment an asset
  • Experience working in a complex policy environment an asset
  • Must be flexible to work beyond the job description at times, as work demands
  • Must be flexible to occasionally work on different schedules, to adjust for off-hour requirements (the Centre works with various international clients who operate in different time-zones)

Interested applicants must submit at least one writing sample where they were the lead or senior author on a publication in a leading journal.
