Assistant Professor, Philosophy of Technology and Science Technology Studies – School of Arts, Media + Engineering, Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University


The School of Arts, Media + Engineering (ame.asu.edu) in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University seeks applicants for a full-time tenure-track appointment at the assistant professor level beginning Fall 2015. The successful candidate will take a leadership role in critical, conceptual and historical studies of recent or emerging technology.

The School of Arts, Media + Engineering is a leading transdisciplinary program in media arts and sciences. The school offers a PhD and a Master’s in media arts and sciences, an undergraduate BA in Digital Culture (http://digitalculture.asu.edu) with concentrations in nine collaborating units spanning the arts, design, sciences and engineering.

The successful candidate is expected to be involved in the development of new undergraduate and graduate curriculum in Digital Culture, and further develop our connections to the public and private sector. The school has state-of-theart facilities for the development of embodied interactive media systems with focus on rehabilitation, education, cultural networks and enactive art. Significant federal, private foundation and industry support along with clinical, education and cultural partnerships contribute to the development and deployment of these systems. Faculty at the School of Arts, Media + Engineering direct two paradigm-shifting centers of research: the Center for Science and the Imagination (http://csi.asu.edu), and Synthesis (http://synthesis.ame.asu.edu).
The appointee's efforts will merge with efforts of other faculty for the achievement of significant advancements in experiential media and more broadly the relation between culture and computing. The appointee is expected to further existing research connections between the School of Arts, Media + Engineering, and units such as the Consortium for Science Policy & Outcomes, Global Institute for Sustainability, School of Life Sciences, or the Fulton Schools of Engineering in areas of common interest related to the appointee’s interests and strengths, and to contribute significantly to the education and research missions of the School.


Required Qualifications:
PhD or an equivalent terminal degree in European Philosophy, East Asian Philosophy, Feminist or Women’s Studies, Anthropology, Literary Studies, History of Technology and Science, or closely related field. Familiarity with works in philosophy of technology or science and technology studies from a non-anglophone as well as anglophone literature. Documented ability to communicate such subjects creatively in teaching or mentoring.

Desired Qualifications:
We seek a candidate who can address the philosophical as well as practical, social implications of technologies with sensitivity to multiple historical and cultural interpretations. The candidate should demonstrate innovative ways to relate major 20th and 21st century thinkers such as Simondon, Foucault, Deleuze, Barad, Karatani, or Stengers to contemporary life conditioned by technology. Informed by collaboration with practitioners, the candidate should be able to engage and reshape scholarly discourse in neighboring disciplines in engineering, humanities, social sciences concerning transdisciplinary matters such as new materiality, post-anthropocentric design, or sustainability. The candidate should be to engage with diverse audiences in public or
non-academic contexts.
