Job description

The Hannah Arendt Center for Politics and Humanities at Bard College announces three post-doctoral fellowships for the 2015-2016 academic year. The fellows should have a Ph.D. in political theory, philosophy, or a related field in the humanities, and his or her work should intersect meaningfully with Hannah Arendt’s thinking.  In residence at the Arendt Center, the fellow will pursue his or her independent research at the Center, which includes Hannah Arendt’s personal library. The fellow will have access to Arendt’s Digital Archive through a relationship with the Arendt Center in New York City. In addition, the fellow will have the opportunity to participate in seminars, conferences, lectures, colloquia, and workshops organized by the Center. For information, click here

One fellow will teach 2 courses (1 and 1), one course in Bard’s First-Year Seminar course and one course in Politics, Philosophy, or related field. For more information on the seminar, click here.

A second fellow will teach 2 courses (1 and 1) in their field of expertise at one of Bard College’s satellite campuses in a NY State Correctional facility. The Bard Prison Initiative is the largest privately funded college in prison in the United States. The third will teach 2 courses (1 and 1) in the political theory sequence at Bard College. One course will be Introduction to Political Thinking. The second will be an intermediate level course in political theory.

All fellows will also be responsible for advising 1 Senior Thesis Project and giving one lecture based on their work as a fellow at one of the Prisons in Bard’s Prison Initiative and also present their work to the Arendt Center community. The fellows will also have the opportunity to contribute to the Arendt Center blog.

Each fellowship runs from Sept. 1 2015 through May 31, 2016 and includes compensation of $27,000. Candidates may also be considered for a teaching position in Bard's Language & Thinking Program, an intensive introduction to the liberal arts and sciences attended by all incoming Bard students during the last three weeks of August. Compensation for this teaching is: $5,000 plus travel for June and July and room and board for the all periods during which the fellow is on campus for the Language and Thinking Program.
