Job description

The position is for two years (full time) with the possibility of a one-year extension.Start date July 1, 2015 or according to agreement.

Information about the Department of Philosophy and research conducted there can be found at http://www.filosofi.uu.se. The position is within the project Varieties of Normativity, financed by Vetenskapsrådet. The project is run by Matti Eklund, Elisabeth Schellekens Dammann and Folke Tersman. The project is about various questions concerning the nature of normativity, with special emphasis on the different varieties of normativity that there seem to be.  More information about the research project can be found at http://www.filosofi.uu.se/forskning/Forskningsprojekt/Normativitetens+olika+former/. Among research that might be relevant to the project is research in metaethics, normative ethics, aesthetics, philosophy of law, metaphysics, and philosophy of language.

Principal duties: The postdoctoral associate is mainly supposed to be engaged in research and to take care of certain administrative duties associated with the project. However, some teaching and supervision of students will also be involved. The position involves regular presence at the department.

Eligibility: To be eligible for the position, the applicant must have received his or her doctoral degree within at most three years before the application deadline. (Given special circumstances, like parental leave or leave of absence, one can be eligible with a somewhat older doctoral degree.) To be eligible one must have shown research expertise in philosophy or receive one’s doctoral degree at latest during the fall of 2015, shown pedagogical expertise, and has the personal characteristics required to perform the duties associated with the post well.

Assessment: Special weight will be attached to the applicant’s research expertise, but pedagogical expertise and administrative skills will also be taken into consideration. In the evaluation of research expertise the most important factor is quality. The applicant shall also have the ability to independently plan, initiate and develop research.

How to apply: A complete application must contain:

  • A CV including a list of the scientific works the applicant appeals to, together with information about research, teaching and other relevant work to date. Personal factors (like parental leave of absence) that might here be of positive relevance to the assessment of the candidate’s merits should be mentioned here.
  • One or more writing samples. If several writing samples are included, the applicant should state which writing sample is to be considered primary.
  • A project description (of at most 5 pages) detailing the research the applicant plans to conduct during his/her time as postdoctoral associate. This description should contain an account of how the project contributes to the international research on the subject. In the description it should also clearly be stated how the applicant’s proposed project relates to the general research project.
  • Names and contact information of three references.
