Job description

The Department of Philosophy and Humanities at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning August 2015.  Salary, benefits, and privileges are competitive with other public research universities.  Excellence in teaching expected.  Ph.D. required before appointment.

The successful candidate will be expected to pursue grant funding in the areas of his or her expertise.  The candidate will also be expected to assume stewardship of the department’s new Ethics Certificate Program and to cultivate collaborative relationships with other units on campus (e.g., the Southwest Center for Mind, Brain, and Education; the Department of Psychology; and the Committee for Responsible Conduct in Research).  The teaching load will be five courses per year, undergraduate, with possibility of summer teaching.  AOS: Metaphysics, with a focus on those aspects of the field (such as free will, moral responsibility, action theory, and personal identity) that overlap with ethics.  AOC: Ethics (including neuroethics); philosophy of science.

UTA is centrally located in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, in close proximity to major cultural, sporting, and entertainment venues, with great restaurants, excellent public and private schools, and superb weather throughout the year.  The Metroplex has six million residents and more than 20 municipalities (http://www.dfwandbeyond.com/cities).  The Department of Philosophy and Humanities, which offers courses in the main branches of philosophy (metaphysics, epistemology, and ethics) as well as in the history of philosophy, consists of five tenured philosophers and one tenured Classicist.
