Job description

The Department of Philosophy at Georgia State University invites applications for one tenured Full or Associate Professor position beginning Fall 2015.

NEUROETHICS AT GSU:
As part of the Second Century Initiative, Georgia State University is creating a new interdisciplinary Neuroethics Program -- a cooperative venture of the Department of Philosophy, the Neuroscience Institute, the Department of Psychology, and the College of Law. The Department of Philosophy has a highly regarded M.A. program with a Neurophilosophy Track, and the Neuroethics Program will support concentrations and new student fellowships in Neuroethics in the PhD programs in Neuroscience and in Psychology. We are part of a thriving interdisciplinary community in Atlanta that includes the Center for Advanced Brain Imaging, the Brains & Behavior Program, the Language Research Center, the Blumenfeld Center for Ethics, and the Atlanta Neuroethics Consortium.

THE POSITION:
The Neuroethics Program includes three new positions. One was recently filled by Nicole Vincent (neurolaw and neuroethics), and another will be filled by a cognitive neuroscientist or psychologist. For the third position, advertised here, we seek an outstanding and established scholar, to be appointed at Associate or Full Professor level with a primary appointment in the Department of Philosophy. This appointment will build on the Department's existing strengths in ethics/philosophy of law, and in empirically informed philosophy of mind/moral psychology. AOS: Ethical and/or Legal Theory, with research on ethical or legal implications of neuroscience, or Philosophy of Mind/Cognitive Science or Moral Psychology, with research on the interactions between these fields and neuroscience. AOC: Open. Salary, benefits, and teaching load will be appropriate for an established scholar.

Applicants will have a Ph.D. or terminal degree in an appropriate field, and an outstanding record in research, teaching, and external fellowships or grants. They should have teaching and research interests that cross traditional disciplinary boundaries, and a desire to build an interdisciplinary Neuroethics Program. Applicants should send a letter of interest, including statement of research interests in Neuroethics, broadly construed, and a CV with a list of references, directly to the chair of the search committee, Nicole Vincent, at [email protected]. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled.

Georgia State University is a research university of the University System of Georgia that is committed to serving a diverse student body. Georgia State University is an AA/EEO Employer. Qualified women and minority candidates are especially encouraged to apply. The Department seeks diversity. Offer of employment will be conditional on background check.
