Job description

The Philosophy Department at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) invites applications for a full time (4/4 teaching expectancy), 9 months, bipartite, term faculty appointment at the assistant professor rank, beginning August 2015. We seek a promising scholar who is committed to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level. The Philosophy Department has approximately 60 majors and offers both a minor and a major. The Philosophy Department has an important mission in community outreach and partners with other programs at UAA to provide instruction and academic support. Department members administer the UAA Ethics Center. The Center emphasizes Alaskan and international approaches in food and environmental ethics, deliberative democracy, professional ethics, and others. Department members have on-going collaborations with colleagues across campus in computer science, biology, WWAMI, psychology, geography, and UAA Confucius Institute, for example.

The Department seeks a candidate dedicated to equity and diversity of the campus community and to promoting an environment that increases student knowledge about local, national, and global communities.

The successful candidate must be able to teach across the core curriculum including Logic, Introduction to Philosophy, History of Philosophy, and Ethics. Non-teaching duties include academic advising, departmental and university service. The successful candidate must be an excellent teacher and have experience interacting with a diverse student body (such as first generation university students, military service veterans and their family members, and Alaska Native students and students of underrepresented groups).
