POSITION: Visiting Faculty in Philosophy, Open Rank (replacement)

RANK & SALARY: Open rank appointment. Salary depends upon rank in this open-rank search.

CONTRACT DATE: September 16, 2015 through June 15, 2016, with possibility of yearly renewal for two additional years.

QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in Philosophy, AOS in American Philosophy, broadly construed to include Pragmatism and other American traditions. The successful candidate will have an active program of research, demonstrated success in teaching, and substantial competence in at least one, preferably two of the following areas: feminist pragmatism, Native American philosophy, philosophy of race, logic. Ability to work with both undergraduate and graduate students, and supervise Graduate Teaching Fellows is required. The ability to teach any of the following courses is considered a strength: PHIL 110 Human Nature, PHIL 451 Native American Philosophy, PHIL 325 Logic, Argument, Inquiry, PHIL 607 graduate American Philosophy Proseminar, an advanced undergraduate/graduate “Author’s Course” on a single author in the American tradition. Finally candidates should have the ability, experience, and explicit desire to speak across philosophical fields, bringing into dialogue their specialization with the history of philosophy, Continental philosophy, feminism, and Latin American or non-western philosophies. Finalist of this position is subject to a criminal background check.

DUTIES: Primary responsibilities for position will be to teach five courses per year (quarter system, 2-2-1 load), advise undergraduate majors and minors, and work with MA and PhD students. Courses will include at least one large lecture course and supervision of graduate teaching assistants. This position requires demonstrating and maintaining an active program of research. A full service load, appropriate to the rank of the successful candidate, is expected. We seek candidates with a commitment to working effectively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.

Living, integrated pluralism characterizes philosophy at the University of Oregon.
