Job description

The University of Groningen invites applications for an assistant or associate professor (tenure track) in economics and philosophy/business ethics in the Department of Economics, Econometrics and Finance of the Faculty of Economics and Business. Tenure track positions are eligible for consideration for award of the title of full professor, generally after ten years, depending on merit.

Interdisciplinary research on economics and philosophy/business ethics in Groningen includes philosophy (philosophy of economics, political theory, financial ethics), economics (financial literacy, socially responsible investing, microfinance, money and banking, history of economic thought, game theory), psychology (sanctions, reputation, social marketing, moral disengagement, groups), and sociology (sustainability, governance), among others.

A Chair in financial ethics was established in the Faculty in 2011 and has led to collaboration with philosophers, financial economists and other social scientists as well as with the financial services industry in The Netherlands and abroad. Interdisciplinary research and teaching will be stimulated further by the establishment of a Centre for Philosophy, Politics and Economics in which researchers from the Faculties of Philosophy, and Economics and Business, will cooperate. The tenure track position will assume a central role in shaping this Centre.

The successful candidate will generally have a PhD in philosophy, business ethics, economics or finance, and have the intellectual drive and open-mindedness to work in a highly interdisciplinary environment. English is the language of instruction in all courses (and used in Faculty administration). Fluency in Dutch will therefore not be required.

Tenure track positions at the Faculty of Economics and Business are temporary positions subject to a tenure decision after the period of six years. Formal tenure track requirements include criteria with respect to research prominence, teaching and external fund raising activities. During the tenure track period 50% of the position is reserved for research and 50% is devoted to teaching.
