Doctoral Research Fellowship in Philosophy – Political Philosophy at the Department of Philosophy

One Doctoral Research Fellowship (PhD) within Philosophy – Political Philosophy, is available in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Tromsø - The Arctic University of Norway (UiT). The position, under the general heading Cosmopolitan Global Justice and Minority Rights, will be placed within the political philosophy research group (Pluralism, Democracy, and Justice).

The appointment is a fixed term position for a period of four years.

The purpose of the PhD Research Fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a doctoral dissertation. The candidate will be affiliated with the Faculty's organised research training, and the academic work must result in a doctoral thesis aiming to obtain the degree of PhD within the period of employment. Admission to a PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position.

The successful candidate must meet the requirements for admission to the Faculty’s PhD program, cf. § 6 of UiT PhD regulations. Moreover, the applicant must prove English language proficiency equivalent to the standards of Norwegian Higher Education Entrance Qualification. Affiliation

The Department of Philosophy offers obligatory introduction courses in philosophy for all the students at the University (“Examen Philosophicum” and “Examen Facultatum”) as well as bachelor, master, and PhD programs in philosophy.

The staff at the department includes 19 researchers and lecturers, two professores emeriti, two professor II, one adjunct professor, five PhD scholars and four administration employees.

The research and teaching at the department is spread over the various fields of philosophy, such as History of Philosophy, Ethics, Political Philosophy, Social Philosophy, Logic, and Philosophy of Science.

The department´s main field of activity concerns issues of Practical Philosophy, and there are two active research groups, one in Political Philosophy (Pluralism, Democracy and Justice) and the other in Ethics (The Ethics Research Group).

The position’s field of research/research project

The PhD position, under the general heading Cosmopolitan Global Justice and Minority Rights, will be placed within the political philosophy research group (Pluralism, Democracy, and Justice). The more specified PhD project should be related to one or more of the following themes:

  1. Theoretical bases for minority rights. The relevant research questions include, but are not restricted to: How should we understand different types of minorities and minority rights in the global context? How to re-conceptualize the normative grounds for minority rights (e.g. human rights based, (global) egalitarian, or identity-based approaches)? How does the rationale and justification for minority rights change when transferred from societal contexts to the global arena?
  2. Agents of global justice. The relevant research questions include, but are not restricted to: How should the responsibilities for minority protection be distributed? What would be the role of different institutional (international, regional, and local) actors in minority protection? What may the new, cosmopolitan models for minority protection look like?
  3. Inclusion/Exclusion. The relevant research questions include, but are not restricted to: How are minorities, and minorities within minorities, included/excluded from different decision making processes? What may be the grounds for this exclusion? What models would best cater for the inclusion of internal minorities, or of those with multiple minority status (e.g. women of an ethnic minority among the global poor)?

Qualification requirements

This position requires a Norwegian Master’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in Philosophy or in a neighboring field, with shown competence (intermediate or advanced level) in political philosophy or political theory.

The work language in the research group Pluralism, Democracy and Justice is English, and the PhD thesis should be written in English.

Personal suitability will be emphasised.

 

Working conditions

The normal period of employment is four years. The nominal length of the PhD programme is three years. The fourth year, distributed as 25 % of each year, is reserved for teaching or other academic duties within the university. Please consult PhD Regulations UiT for further information.

The position will especially be assigned teaching duties within philosophy.

A shorter period of appointment may be decided upon if the applicant has already completed parts of his/her research training programme or if the appointment is based on a previous qualifying position (PhD Candidate, research assistant, or the like) in such a way that the research training amounts to a total of three years.

Remuneration for the position of PhD Candidate is in accordance with the State salary scale

code 1017. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.

    • author(s), title of work
    • for articles: the name of the journal and volume, first and last page of the article, year of publication
    • for book or other independent publications: publisher, place of print, year of publication, number of pages

All documentation must be certified and translated into English or a Scandinavian language in order to be assessed.

Information and material to be considered during the assessment must be submitted within the stipulated deadline.

 

Assessment

The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. During this assessment process, emphasis will be attached to the applicant’s potential for research as shown by:

  • Master’s thesis or equivalent
  • other academic works, and
  • project description  

Out of these, the project description will be given most weight.                                  

In addition, consideration may be given to work experience or other activities of significance for the implementation of the PhD research. This includes teaching education, teaching experience, experience from popularisation and experience/education from other types of dissemination.

The best qualified applicants will be selected for interviews. The interview shall among other things aim to clarify the applicant’s personal suitability for the position.
